How Much Are You Actually Spending on Menopause Supplements?
One in five women spend between $50 and $100 a month on supplements for menopause. Another 5% spend over $100.
That’s $600 to $1,200 per year. Minimum.
And here’s what I want you to know: that number is a trap. Not because you’re bad with money. Because the system is bad at honesty.
THE SUPPLEMENT SPIRAL
Let me tell you what I see.
A woman in her mid-40s walks into a pharmacy. She hasn’t slept well in two months. She’s foggy in meetings. Her mind is doing things it’s never done before. She asks a pharmacist or a friend or reads something online, and someone—with the best intentions—suggests supplements.
Black cohosh. Red clover. Dong quai. Evening primrose. Maca root. Saffron. Vitex. The list is long. The promises are longer.
She buys three. Maybe five. The cost is $40 here, $35 there. Nothing feels like much. But months pass. Nothing changes. So she adds another supplement. And another.
By month four, she’s spending $80 a month on bottles that promise “hormonal balance” and “mood support” and “natural relief.”
By month eight, she’s spent $640 on something nobody—not her doctor, not the supplement company, not the internet—can tell her actually works.
Here’s what’s true: Dozens of over-the-counter supplements are marketed to menopausal women, but because they don’t require FDA approval, women should be cautious about their effectiveness. None of these ingredients are considered effective for menopause relief by the Menopause Society.
Let me say that again. None of them. Not one.
The Menopause Society looked at the evidence. And they said: these don’t work. Not as proven treatments. Not reliably.
But women are still buying them. Spending money on them. Hoping they’ll work. Believing the marketing because the alternative—admitting nothing is helping—feels worse.
THE REAL COST NOBODY’S TALKING ABOUT
Women often spend $50-100 per month on multiple supplements with limited effectiveness, while prescription hormone therapy costs $50-150 per month with proven results.
Read that again.
You can be spending five times as much on something that doesn’t work. Or you can spend a fraction of that on something proven to address the actual cause.
But here’s the thing: you don’t know that. And you don’t know it because nobody told you what was actually happening.
You weren’t told that your brain fog, your sleep disruption, your night sweats, your weight gain—these aren’t personality flaws or signs you’re falling apart. They’re symptoms of hormonal change. Specific, recognizable, treatable symptoms.
Instead, you were sold the idea that natural equals better. That trying supplements first is the responsible choice. That you should “see if it goes away on its own.”
It doesn’t. Not usually. And while you’re waiting and buying supplements, you’re losing time. You’re losing sleep. You’re losing focus at work. You’re losing money.
The global menopause supplement market is $17 billion and growing more than 5% each year. That growth isn’t because supplements are more effective. It’s because the marketing is more aggressive. And women are more desperate.
WHY YOU CAN’T TRUST WHAT YOU’RE BUYING
Here’s the other part nobody says out loud: supplements don’t require FDA approval, and there are no guardrails ensuring how much of each ingredient you’re consuming or whether the supplement even contains the stated ingredients.
You’re buying something from a shelf and trusting that what’s in the bottle is what the label says. That it’s the amount stated. That it’s safe to take alongside whatever else you’re taking.
You’re trusting that. And the government isn’t verifying it.
That’s not being careful. That’s flying blind.
Meanwhile, 42% of women find menopause supplements at least somewhat difficult to afford. They’re cutting into real money. Grocery money. Medicine money. Bill money.
And they’re not working.
WHAT THIS ACTUALLY COSTS YOU
The $50 to $100 per month is real. But it’s not the only cost.
There’s the cost of untreated symptoms. The meetings where you can’t focus. The promotion you don’t go for because you don’t trust your brain anymore. The sleep you lose. The patience you lose with people you love.
That means you’re choosing between this and something else. Every single month.
That’s a choice you shouldn’t have to make. And you’re making it because you don’t know what your actual options are. You don’t know the real costs. You don’t know what’s covered. You don’t know what actually works.
You just know you feel terrible. And you’re spending money on something that doesn’t help.
THE QUESTION THAT MATTERS
Stop asking “How much am I spending on supplements?” Start asking “Why am I spending on supplements instead of getting a diagnosis?”
